Abstract:

In this episode, Dr. Eyal Ben-Isaac is joined by Dr. Prashanthi Kandavel, a pediatric gastroenterologist at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, to provide a comprehensive overview of hematochezia in infants and young children. They discuss common causes such as anal fissures, food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis, food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES), infectious colitis, juvenile polyps, Meckel’s diverticulum, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The conversation includes guidance on diagnosis, management, and when to refer to a specialist. Dr. Kandavel emphasizes the importance of clinical history, dietary modifications, and appropriate testing in managing these conditions.

Dr. Prashanthi Kandavel

Dr. Prashanthi Kandavel

Dr. Prashanthi Kandavel is a pediatric gastroenterologist and the Quality Improvement Champion for the Division of Gastroenterology at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. She serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. Dr. Kandavel completed her medical degree at Rosalind Franklin University, followed by pediatric residency and a fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at the University of Michigan. She is board-certified in Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics.
