Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, the learners should be able to:

  • Know the different materials and techniques used for laceration repair
  • Choose appropriate materials and techniques depending on the injury
  • Identify lacerations that require referral to the Emergency Department

 

Intended Audience:

This online course is designed for pediatricians and family physicians, emergency department doctors.

Abstract:

This online course teaches practical laceration care for children; from patient preparation, analgesia/sedation, and immobilization to irrigation and repair techniques (Dermabond, hair apposition, Steri-Strips, staples, and sutures). It applies the PECARN head-injury rule to minimize unnecessary CTs, then walks through site-specific management for scalp/forehead, eyebrow, vermilion border and oral injuries, chin, fingers (including digital blocks and nail-bed care), and high-tension extremity wounds. Learners will master material selection (fast-absorbing gut, Vicryl Rapide, chromic gut, non-absorbables), recognition of cases needing ED/subspecialty referral, and evidence-based aftercare (infection prophylaxis, splinting, tetanus updates, sun protection). The course emphasizes practical pearls, parent counseling, and cosmetic outcomes.

This course in English is not CME-accredited. However, it provides valuable educational content that can enhance your knowledge and skills in the subject matter. To receive CME credit for this course in Armenia, you must take the course in Armenian and complete the post-course quiz. You have three chances to achieve a passing score of 70%. Once you pass the quiz, we will send your information to the Armenian Ministry of Health for credits.

Dr. Arshad Jiffrey

Dr. Arshad Jiffrey

Dr. Arshad Jiffry is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and an Attending Physician at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where he also serves as the Assistant Fellowship Director for the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship. He completed his General Pediatrics residency at CHLA, where he later served as Chief Resident. Dr. Jiffry’s clinical interests include pediatric acute care, trauma, orthopedic injuries, lacerations, and infectious diseases. His research focuses on cost-containment and workplace wellness, particularly physician burnout. He is board-certified in General Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics and is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Jiffry has been recognized with the Chief Resident Service Award and the Walter E. MacPherson Society Student Research Award.
