  • Describe the differential diagnosis of secondary hypertension in a pediatric patient. 
  • Understand the history and physical exam elements suggestive of secondary causes of hypertension. 
  • Perform the initial diagnostic workup for secondary causes of hypertension. 

Intended Audience:

This online course is designed for pediatricians, family physicians, and pediatric nurses.

Abstract:

While essential hypertension is the leading cause of hypertension in children and adolescents, pediatric patients are significantly more likely than adults to have a secondary cause of their hypertension. This session will review the initial approach to pediatric patients with elevated blood pressures, go over red flag signs and symptoms of secondary etiologies of hypertension, and discuss the clinical presentation and diagnostic workup for various causes of secondary hypertension with a particular emphasis on renovascular disease and monogenic forms of hypertension.
