Abstract:

In this episode, Dr. Eyal Ben Isaac interviews pediatric cardiologist Dr. Jonathan Uniat to demystify innocent heart murmurs in children. Dr. Uniat defines innocent murmurs, highlighting their benign nature and how they differ from pathological murmurs. He categorizes the four major types: Still’s murmur, pulmonary flow murmur, venous hum, and supraclavicular or carotid bruit, detailing their typical presentations and auscultation findings. The discussion covers the initial workup for murmurs, including key steps in history taking, physical examination, and when further tests are necessary. Dr. Uniat also provides guidelines on when to refer a patient to a pediatric cardiologist, helping primary care providers make informed decisions. This episode is essential for healthcare professionals looking to enhance their understanding and management of pediatric heart murmurs.
