Abstract:
In this episode, Dr. Eyal Ben-Isaac interviews Dr. Jacob Spitznagle, pediatric rheumatologist at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, about juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM), the most common inflammatory myopathy of childhood. They discuss the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and diverse clinical presentations of JDM, including its characteristic skin findings, proximal muscle weakness, and potential systemic complications. The conversation also reviews the diagnostic evaluation, emerging role of myositis-specific autoantibodies, current treatment strategies, long-term prognosis, and key clinical pearls to help pediatric providers recognize and manage this rare but serious autoimmune disease.

Dr. Jacob Spitznagle
Jacob Spitznagle, MD, is an Attending Physician at Children's Hospital Los Angeles and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. He earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, completed his pediatric residency at the University of California, San Francisco, and pursued fellowship training in Pediatric Rheumatology at Hospital for Special Surgery/NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Spitznagle is board-certified in Pediatric Rheumatology by the American Board of Pediatrics.
