Intended Audience:

This online course is designed for pediatricians and family physicians.

Abstract:

This online course provides practical, evidence-based guidance for safely refeeding youth hospitalized with malnutrition due to anorexia nervosa or atypical anorexia. It covers diagnostic criteria, admission guidelines, and structured nutrition protocols, including recommended calorie ranges (1,400–2,000 kcal/day) with daily increases to achieve steady weight gain. Participants will learn best practices for meal schedules, time limits, use of supplements, and when to use tube feeding if oral intake is inadequate. Refeeding syndrome is reviewed in detail, with clear steps for monitoring, supplementation, and managing electrolyte shifts and thiamine needs.
The course also addresses common challenges like GI distress, explaining how to normalize symptoms and keep the focus on nutrition as treatment. Strategies for reducing stigma, supporting families, and promoting empathy are highlighted, ensuring that parents and patients understand that eating disorders are illnesses, not choices.
